HWEA’s participation in ASSURE program
November 2023
HWEA has participated in the implementation of the 28 month research project ”ASSURE: Automated specialized surveillance radar application technologies for accurately assessing and mitigating the effects of wind-turbine generated electromagnetic wave scattering” as part of the action: Ε.Π.
The objective of the research project ASSURE is the design and development of a novel, reliable software tool, able to determine the effects of electromagnetic waves on surveillance radars due to the presence of wind turbines in their vicinity. An automated, parametric and upgradable software tool is developed, that will be able to estimate and mitigate the electromagnetic wave scattering from neighboring wind turbines on radar systems. The project aims at providing specialized radar analysis methods for surveillance applications, in a burdened electromagnetic environment, by reducing false alarms and increasing the probability of detection.
ASSURE focuses on the effect of wind turbines within the radar coverage area. Because of the electromagnetic (EM) scattering and clutter phenomena caused by the rotational movement of wind turbines, the positioning of wind farms close to the radar surveillance fields, significantly affects their function for target identification and recognition. This requires systematically analysis of these effects.
ASSURE aspires to address the above issues by developing an automated, parametric and extensible software tool based on accurate theoretical models and simulation parameters that visualize the effects of wind farms using types of topographic data in a user-friendly environment. The tool accurately assesses the adverse effects of wind turbines on radars, creating a precise and systematic model of the relevant effects, taking into account the characteristics of radar and of wind turbines, as well as those of the scattering targets by enabling the setting of ban zones.
Other partners of the ASSURE projects are the Institute of Communication and Computer Systems of NTUA, the European Dynamics S.A., the ENTEKA Wind Farms Crete S.A. and the Ministry of Defense.
