Workshop for Floating Offshore Wind in Greece

The wind potential that lies in the Greek waters is very big. If we capitalise on this in the same way as the UK has with bottom fixed offshore wind, there is no reason why floating wind won’t become one of the largest energy sources in Greece. Just as bottom fixed wind offshore is now becoming for UK. Energy independence and security of supply of Greece and Europe would also improve, maximizing the local added value and increasing the geopolitical power of Greece. There is no other Greek energy source that can realistically do this. We shouldn’t sound over enthusiastic, but it needs to come forward that this is a big deal, everything is in place for this to work and it is happening now. Our role is to inspire politicians and to advise the administration on how to create the proper framework as soon as possible in order to exploit this possibility and bringing Greece to a pioneering position in Mediterranean.

This is the main message of ELETAEN within the Workshop it co-organised with the Norwegian Embassy in Athens, on Friday 12 April 2019 at Hilton Hotel. During the workshop presentations have been given by:

  • The Ambassador of Norway in Greece and Cyprus Mr. Jorn Gjelstad
  • The General Secretary of Energy and Mineral Resources Mr. Michalis Verriopoulos
  • The representative of RAE Mr. Dionysios Papachristou
  • The Professor of International Law at Panteion University Mr. Angelos Syrigos
  • The representative of Equinor Mr. Arne Eik
  • The president of ELETAEN Mr. Panagiotis Ladakakos

Moreover, Mrs Anne Lise Rognlidalen presented the program of the Norwegian Government “Innovation Norway”.

More than 120 persons, members of ELETAEN and friends of wind energy participated in the workshop. Among them: the representatives of the four systemic Greek Banks, Professor Arthouros Zervos, Professor Spyros Mavrakos President of ELKETHE, Professor Stavros Papathanassiou, Ioannis Chatzivaliadis President of IENE, Nikos Stefanatos from CRES and Christos Tsigkis CEO of the Cypriot Association of Wind Energy.
